Healthcare providers are committed to delivering exceptional services while prioritizing patient satisfaction and ensuring seamless access to healthcare facilities.  Not only is it essential for the well-being of patients to provide top-notch care in a welcoming setting, but it also strengthens the healthcare system as a whole. In this blog, we’ll look at ten ways to make healthcare more accessible and increase patient experience.

Delivering the Highest Standard of Support, from Arrival to Discharge

Nothing is more important than ensuring the highest possible level of care and patient experience to patients, residents, and visitors. A safe, comfortable, and clean environment is essential to providing all levels of patient care.

Whether you operate a hospital, care setting, healthcare site or medical facility, you need a service provider who will help you achieve your mission and strategic initiatives.  At the same time, the right provider will help maximise operational and financial efficiencies and help you achieve your performance objectives and satisfaction goals.

Four steps for creating seamless patient experiences

Encourage patient autonomy

Patients today typically browse online resources before consulting specialists or other healthcare practitioners.  They want to make decisions about their healthcare needs and want to be well-informed. This is a departure from medical paternalism where doctors determine the care and treatments for patients.

We recognise that the public can benefit from a credible resource portal which enables people to take ownership of their well-being.  Hence, we developed Health Plus, a source of up-to-date and accurate health and wellness information, that is contributed by our accredited specialists and healthcare professionals.

Create an eco-friendly institution

Consumers are becoming more conscious of the environment, and for good reason – our choices in the hospital can have adverse consequences on our habitat, which then leads to indirect effects on our patients’ health.

In order to find the most effective energy-saving methods and cut down on waste, it only makes sense that we take the initiative to establish environmentally friendly facility management standards. I want to emphasise that it is essential this is done without compromising infection control standards (where single-use plastics have great utility for example).  Mount Elizabeth Hospital is working toward eliminating plastic bags for the first time.

Provide a “green healing” spaces

As we move towards progressively holistic approaches in healthcare, we must also look outside conventional ways of helping patients rehabilitate and recover from surgeries.  We are planning to introduce biophilic designs by integrating sustainable green spaces like gardens, water features and other natural features into our infrastructure in the near future.

This departure from the standard clinical and sterile aesthetic is a clear sign that hospitals nowadays prioritise not just patients’ physiological, but also psychological well-being.  Likewise, creating therapeutic oases of calm in the building allows our staff to rest and relax, thus reducing stress levels and anxiety at work.

Foster greater synergy in the hospital

In private hospitals, patients have high expectations about their hospital experiences.  They want to communicate, be reassured and be looked after by qualified and proficient staff.  This inspired us to design processes that are team-based and focused on departmental collaboration.  The wards and offices avoided duplication of effort and improved communication thanks to these procedures. In addition, our hospital staff works better and more effectively together due to a stronger sense of community. The improved co-ordination has led to a solid improvement in our care delivery and patient satisfaction.

In conclusion, sustainable healthcare must constantly evolve to meet the requirements of those it serves. With consumers preferring transparency and becoming more discerning than before, insights from patient behaviours and perceptions are pivotal to designing holistic healthcare solutions.  As part of Singapore’s private healthcare sector, I will continue to explore new initiatives to boost patient experience and engagement, and work hand-in-hand with my fellow healthcare professionals to take Singapore’s healthcare to the next level.

Make waiting areas comfortable

High noise levels and uncomfortable seating can be a distraction to patients whose anxieties may be high.  Making patients feel at ease can be greatly enhanced by providing snacks, charging stations, comfortable chairs, and removing unnecessary noise sources.

Demonstrate empathy and compassion

Sixty-four percent of adults in the United States polled by The Harris Poll in 2023 want healthcare providers to spend more time getting to know them, and forty-nine percent of those polled said that healthcare providers don’t always listen to them. Furthermore, nearly one-third of them reported feeling rushed during a healthcare appointment.

In order to combat this, it is essential for providers to demonstrate to the patient that they are being cared for. This begins with being kind, being present, and truly listening to the patient’s concerns. A provider should also recognize a patient’s emotions when making care decisions and reflect these emotions back to the patient.  If a patient believes they are receiving compassionate, patient-centered care, they are much more likely to accept recommendations.
